NASA Finds Entire Solar System Filled with Planets Like our Own

NASA has found an entire solar system with as many planets as our own. The discovery of two new planets around the Kepler-90 star, which looks like our own sun, means that distant solar system has just as many planets as our own.

The star and its solar system were already known. But the breakthrough came when astronomers found the two new worlds, which was done using Google's artificial intelligence technology.

That suggests that there might be whole worlds and solar systems hiding within the data we've already collected, but which we hadn't been able to notice because there is simply so many signals to pick through.

“Just as we expected, there are exciting discoveries lurking in our archived Kepler data, waiting for the right tool or technology to unearth them,” said Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division in Washington. “This finding shows that our data will be a treasure trove available to innovative researchers for years to come.”

  2. And just how do you propose to travel there? We have barely enough energy here on Earth to sustain ourselves, let alone fueling a space craft to these worlds. Speed is another issue. Will you be able to reach the nearest star in an average human lifespan? I don't see it. Maybe we should invest the money used to find these planets and stars for preserving humans, and make Earth more habitable for all living creatures.

    1. Actually, we had access to harnessing geothermal energy since 1911... and we could have used active super-volcanoes since the 1970-ies to power the globe... not to mention wind, solar, tidal and wave power.

      Oh and space based solar power (aka Dyson Swarm - which could be made using automated bots that would self-replicate exponentially and build the Dyson swarm using exponential methods by using Mercury for raw material).

      Plus, there's about 13 000 Zettajoules in the Earth... of which, we currently have access to about 400 Zettajoules (that would supply us with renewable heat and electricity for 400 years), whereas improved extraction methods would get us 2000 zettajoules.

      Its a common misconception in thinking there's a shortage of anything.... our problems lie in mis-management of existing resources, coupled with for profit system based on money.

      If you want to preserve humans and make Earth more habitable for all living creatures, I suggest you look into The Venus Project (aka Resource Based Economy).

      And while yes travelling to another star system in an appreciable amount of time right now is still a bit unfeasible... we could have comfortably colonized the solar system since the 1970-ies and build a fully functional Dyson Swarm by now.

      People really don't understand the full scope of our technical and scientific capabilities because we're really only using a small fraction of it in a very misguided capacity.
